Leatherworking is a craft I’ve been wanting to explore for a while, but I knew I needed a small, manageable project to get my feet wet. Instead of diving in headfirst and investing in a bunch of tools right away, I decided to start with something simple: custom leather bookmarks. Since I already have an xTool P2 laser, I figured using it to handle most of the heavy lifting would be a great way to ease into working with leather while keeping the initial investment minimal.
A Simple Leather Project with a High-Quality Finish
For this project, I used a 4-5oz piece of leather, which is a nice balance between flexibility and durability. The process started with selecting and preparing the leather, then designing the bookmark shape and engraving details in the laser software. The laser cutter made quick work of the cutting and engraving, producing precise edges and clean, professional designs.
Once the laser work was done, it was time to get hands-on. I stained the leather to give it a rich, finished look, then conditioned it to ensure longevity and a soft texture. Finally, I added a tassel for a bit of extra flair. The result? A custom, handmade bookmark that looks great and gave me a solid introduction to leatherworking without needing an entire workshop of specialized tools.
Confidence to Move Forward
Now that I’ve completed this basic project, I feel much more confident in expanding my leatherworking skills. The laser cutter made the entry process easy, but it also showed me that I enjoy working with leather enough to start investing in the right tools for more traditional projects. Next up, I’m thinking about tackling a real leatherworking project—maybe a belt or a wallet—where I’ll be doing more cutting, stitching, and finishing by hand.
If you’ve been curious about leatherworking but hesitant to jump in, I highly recommend starting with a simple project like this. It’s a great way to familiarize yourself with the material, learn some basic techniques, and decide if you want to pursue the craft further. Stay tuned for more projects as I continue learning and refining my skills!
